Hardwood or vinyl plank (LVP): which is right for your home?

How solid hardwood, engineered hardwood and vinyl plank compare on look, water resistance, lifespan and cost.

Written by NAD Wood Floors Inc.

Solid hardwood

Solid hardwood is real wood all the way through. It can be sanded and refinished many times over its life, so it can last for generations and be restained to change the look. It is the classic choice for living areas, bedrooms and stairs.

Engineered hardwood

Engineered hardwood has a real wood top layer over a stable core. It looks like solid hardwood and handles changes in humidity well. How many times it can be refinished depends on the thickness of that top layer.

Vinyl plank (LVP)

Luxury vinyl plank is a printed, wood-look floor with a protective wear layer. It is highly water-resistant, which makes it popular for basements, kitchens, laundry rooms and rentals. It can't be sanded and refinished like hardwood; worn planks are replaced.

Laminate

Laminate is another wood-look option with a hard, scratch-resistant surface at a budget-friendly price. Many newer laminates handle spills better than older ones, but most are still less water-resistant than vinyl plank.

How to choose

Think about the room, moisture, how long you plan to stay and your budget. Many homes use hardwood in the main living areas and vinyl plank where water is a concern. We install all of these and can help you decide during your free estimate.
